Guy from Studio Small has been in touch with a few images and information on a recent fun project for Icon Magazine and their ongoing 'Rethink' feature which each month asks a design studio to refresh an existing brand of their choice. Studio Small chose Meccano, as Guy explains a little more about the Rethink:
'So we eventually agreed on Meccano. We loved it as kids and we admired the vision and imagination of the original inventor Frank Hornby. Frank who with no formal training created three of the most successful toy brands of the last century: Meccano, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky.
When we looked at the nuts and bolts (pardon the pun) of the problem we found the current product hinged around single models not a set of components for building your own creations. We felt this limited your creativity and lacked magic. It also meant each box had a small set of solutions not infinite possibilities. So we imagined a richer more immersive Meccano product experience where consumers could create their own iconic set to their own specifications. So we designed Meccano+ (plus). A Meccano for for the Nike ID generation, a toy for the slightly obsessive compulsive amongst us. In Meccano+, our solution is a toy that fosters a relationship between Meccano and the end user where the augmented reality is built into the box and component silhouette so if you want more inspiration you can receive it straight to your smart phone. A model based on a particular theme or a GPS position could propose local landmarks or buildings as further ideas of things to create.'
